The Malt ‘N’ Hops was previously called the Red house. It was in June 1986 that Len Turner and wife Alice opened the Malt ‘N’ Hops .
Len was born in 1946 in Edinburgh and moved to North Staffordshire in 1966. “ We soon got to know the area when we took over” says Len who previously kept the Foaming Quart in Burslem. “The pub was disgusting. There used to be a little off-sales hatch as you come in, as well as a small bar and a lounge. One room was never used, in fact, there was a padlock on the door! We extended backwards the rear of the pub was once a yard”
Len started travelling far and wide in his pursuit for special beers for his customers “I was doing guest beers before anyone else thought about it. I used to spend a couple of days a week travelling around the country fetching beer in a van. There’s a lot of rubbish about. You have to buy the right stuff”
Len and Alice have retired and the Malt ‘N’ Hops is now run by their son Scott, who has continued to outsource the very best beers. When Len first introduced quest beers he had two house beers and an ever-changing four guest beers. We now have 9 pumps of regular beers and lagers, plus 8 Guest Ales.
