The history of The Sovereign goes back over 160 years to the reign of King George IV when a local entrepreneur, Seth Senior built a brewery on the site in 1829.
Legend has it the business was started with a borrowed sovereign and many believe that in commemoration of its origins, a gold coin is still buried somewhere on the premises.
